ABOUT

Within my practice I explore ideas around disability and how it is represented and perceived within society and media. I am interested in ideas around ‘the perfect body’, and the effect that this unrealistic expectation has had on society. I am also interested in the relationship between the work and the viewer, exploring ways of allowing the viewer to encounter the work, and therefore the content/context of what they are seeing.

My work is influenced by personal experiences of living with Type 1 Diabetes. I am exploring how my ‘invisible’ disability is viewed by society; the effects that my disability has had on my mind and body; and also the relationship between myself and my disability. The intention of my work is to share these experiences and educate the viewer, and to encourage them to question stereotypes and the current social view of disability.

I make mixed media pieces, installations, and sculptures. Some of the materials I use within my practice include paper, photographs, embroidery/thread, mirrors, and cardboard. I use cardboard within my work as the material can be associated with something that is familiar and recognisable, creating a sense of comfort within the viewer. By using a needle and thread within my works, this creates connections to the disability being explored, as holes are punched through the material to allow thread to travel through, similarly to insulin travelling via needle into the body. Currently, I am exploring ideas around prediction and control, and how these forces tie together ideas within medicine and astrology, using precise calculations to determine medication doses. I have also been exploring connotations connected to mirrors, including how they can be used to reflect reality and present an image of oneself.
